 Readsboro Town School District

 Readsboro, Vermont

 School Directors Meeting

 at Readsboro Central School

 On March 21, 2012

 

 In attendance: Karen Boisvert, Larry Hopkins, Charlotte Clark, Debra Vaughan, Dr. Jack Rizzo, Rod Salamone, Mike Casalinova, Christine Levy, Jeanette Linnehan, Bob Marechal.

 

 Meeting was called to order by Principal Debra Vaughan at 5 pm.

 

 School board reorganization:

 

 Charlotte made a motion to appoint Larry Hopkins as school board chairperson. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Charlotte made a motion to appoint Karen Boisvert as vice chairperson. Larry seconded. Motion passed.

 

Larry made a motion to appoint Charlotte as clerk. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

Charlotte made a motion to appoint the entire school board as: transportation officer, negotiation representatives, budget/finance representatives, superboard official representatives, and legislative representatives. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Charlotte made a motion to appoint Larry as the executive board representative. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Larry made a motion to appoint the Vermont State police in Shaftsbury as truancy officer for Readsboro Central School.  Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Larry made a motion to use the North Adams Transcript, Deerfield Valley News, and the Brattleboro Reformer as designated newspapers. Charlotte seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Larry made a motion to accept the minutes of February 15, 2012. Charlotte seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Larry made a motion to accept the minutes of March 5, 2012. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Tuition agreements were signed with Twin Valley high school and Searsburg school district.

 

 Warrants totaling $213,701.87 were signed.

 

 Mike Casalinova presented the board with plans for this year's eighth grade class trip. The trip will be held from May 31, 2012 until Sunday, June 3, 2012 in New York City. The itinerary includes a baseball game, a visit to Chinatown, the Staten Island ferry, the Bronx Zoo, Rockefeller Center, and more. The class has raised $5712 so far. The cost of the trip is estimated between $6500 and $7200. There are seven students in the eighth grade. The chaperones will be Tammy Deblois and Mike Casalinova.

 

 Charlotte made a motion to approve the eighth grade class trip to New York City beginning on May 31, 2012 until Sunday, June 3, 2012. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Principal's report: please see attached sheet.

 

 Superintendent's report: Dr. Rizzo reported that work with the Marshall's rubrics has gone very well. They are a tool used to help enhance instruction and improve performance in school.

 

 Dr. Rizzo reported that Monday assemblies have been going very well at Readsboro School. There has been more music and presentations of an academic nature.

 

 The search for a new principal is underway. Eight candidates are scheduled for interviews starting on March 27. Karen will be the school board representative on the committee.

 

 There are no updates on the hiring of a school board clerk. Debra will repost this position and send it out through the red folders.

 

 Teacher contracts were signed by the board for the 2012-2013 school year.

 

 Repairs to the school playground were put on hold until spring. Dr. Rizzo informed the board that the WSSU will be receiving some monies from FEMA but the amounts are unclear as of right now.

 

 The board was presented with the NECAP testing results. 46 children were assessed. Third through eighth grades participated. Readsboro school was 85% proficient in reading. The state level of reading proficiency was 74%. Dr. Rizzo stated that Readsboro's scores in reading were excellent.

 

 Christine Levy and Jeanette Linnehan gave a presentation about a new program they would like to see implemented in school. The program is about adolescent growth and development. The boys and girls would be given separate classes. Children would only be allowed to participate with parents permission. The fifth through eighth grades would be involved.

 

 Charlotte made a motion to approve the adolescent growth and development program for Readsboro school. Karen seconded. Motion passed. Larry abstained from voting.

 

Larry made a motion to approve the town office's request to place an antenna on the school building. Charlotte seconded. Motion passed.

 

 Debra presented the board with pricing for the new school buzzer system. Charlotte made a motion to approve the proposal from Swan Electric. Karen seconded. Motion passed.

 

 A discussion about who will man the new buzzer system was held. The board discussed the definition of what type of employee to hire. Charlotte stated that it had already been determined that they would hire someone who would stay in the office and take care of the buzzer from 12:30 till 3 pm. Dr. Rizzo stressed the need for a full time administrative assistant in every school in the district. He told the board they were crazy not to have one, and that it was a mistake not to consider it.

 

 There was much discussion on the matter. The board asked Debra to repost the position and also send the posting home in the red folders.

 

 Larry made a motion to adjourn at 6:48 pm. Charlotte seconded. Motion passed.
